If you've ever watched your maize plants grow tall, only to harvest half-filled cobs with missing kernels, you're not alone.
For us, we know that maize has a reputation for being a reliable crop, and it is, but most people grow it at the wrong time.

Today, I'm sharing exactly how we do it. And how to time your maize planting so flowering happens during the most reliable rains, not just when the rains begin.
Why we plant maize at the wrong time
Maize looks like it needs water all the time, but it actually has specific periods when moisture is absolutely critical.
The big difference is that we focus on when to plant, while successful ones focus on when the plant will flower.

You see, that early-planting habit is the main reason so many people get disappointed with yields.
When you plant too early, your maize flowers during the unpredictable middle period of the rainy season.
Because of this, the tassels emerge, the silks appear, but the consistent moisture isn't there.
This creates the perfect conditions for poor pollination, incomplete kernel formation, and yields that are 30-50% below what they should be.

This crop needs water
In the first three to four weeks after planting, you'll realize that young maize plants are building their root systems and early leaves.
Yes, they need some moisture to establish, but they're surprisingly tolerant of moderate stress during this period.
A few dry days won't ruin your crop...
The plants might look a bit stressed, but they'll recover once rains return.
The same goes for the middle vegetative stage, roughly from week four to week seven.
In this stage, you'll see your maize growing rapidly, putting on height and more leaves.

During this season, water is helpful, and adequate moisture will give you stronger plants, but short dry spells won't devastate your harvest.
The reason is that the plants have deep enough roots to reach moisture, and they're not yet at the critical reproductive stage.
Flowering stage
This takes roughly from week seven to week eleven depending on your variety...
During this period, your maize undergoes the most sensitive process in its entire life cycle.
In fact, the tassel at the top of the plant produces pollen.
The silks emerging from each developing cob must catch that pollen.
Plus, each individual silk must be connected to a potential kernel inside the cob.
If a silk gets pollinated, you get a kernel. If it doesn't, you get an empty space on your cob.
And guess what.
This pollination process needs three things to work properly:
- Viable pollen
- Receptive silks
- The right environmental conditions.
The bad news is that water stress during flowering disrupts all three.
When the weather is dry during tasseling and silking, the pollen becomes less viable.
You see it dries out quickly in hot, dry air and loses its ability to fertilize the silks.
The silks themselves become dry and less receptive to pollen.
Even if pollination occurs, water-stressed plants often abort developing kernels to conserve resources.
You'll see results like this when you walk through a maize field.
You'll see cobs that started developing but stopped halfway.
And every missing kernel represents lost yield and lost income.
We count backward from flowering, not forward from planting
We know people pick a planting date...
For us, we do the opposite.
We take our variety's days-to-flowering and we count backward from the most reliable stretch of rain in our local calendar.
If our maize flowers 55 days after planting, and we know the safest rainfall window in our area runs from late June through July, we plant so that day 55 lands right in the middle of that window.

Why do we aim for the middle of the reliable window?
If we aim for the very start of our reliable rainfall stretch, we're gambling that the rains arrive exactly on schedule, not a few days late, not a week late. Rain patterns shift every year.
Right?
If we planted to hit day 55 right at the opening of that window and the rains come even five days late, our flowering stage gets pushed into the unreliable stretch right before it, the very thing we were trying to avoid.
If we aim for the very end of the window instead, we're gambling the other way, that the reliable rains hold on right up until the last possible day, with no early cutoff.
So when we aim for the middle it gives us a buffer on both sides.
If the rains run a little early or a little late that particular year, our flowering window still mostly falls inside the safe stretch.
We're not trying to be perfectly precise.
We're trying to be wrong in a way that still doesn't hurt us...
We split our planting into two or three batches
We don't plant our entire farm in one day.
The reason is simple.
Rain is unpredictable.
So instead of betting everything on one planting date, we stagger our planting across 10 to 14 days, in two or three batches...
If the rains behave exactly as expected, we lose almost nothing, our batches flower close together anyway.
But if the rains delay, or a dry spell hits right during flowering for one batch, the other batches are usually flowering at a different time and escape the damage...
